LNA Conversion to EPA & DHA

Researchers already know that Omega-3 fish oils have two active components: EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). Both these components are found in cells and are essential for efficient brain and nerve stimulation. But to get there, both EPA and DHA must be in sufficient supply. If one of them goes under the recommended levels, then the body automatically goes on "conversion" mode.

The body can convert EPA and DHA but it needs help to do this. EPA and DHA are produced by the body with the help of another essential fatty acid - alpha-linolenic acid (LNA). Scientists call it the w2 fatty acid. If the body is healthy, its ability to produce EPA and DHA from LNA is assured; however, when the body is suffering from a certain ailment, its ability to convert EPA and DHA can be compromised.

The reason it is important for the body to convert LNA (also known as ALA, or alpha linolenic acid) into EPA and DHA is their ability to prevent the formation of harmful fat. One characteristic of these fatty acids is that they disperse freely, they do not stick together. Because of this dispersion, fats are not that easily formed, nor do they build up in the body.
