Fish Oil Supplements Made in America

Why A Fish Oil Supplement?

Why are today's researchers pursuing their efforts into fish oil supplements? Why has high potency fish oil suddenly become a health preoccupation among users, putting fish oil dietary supplements on top of their shopping list when they're looking to improve their health and to ward off the ravages of chronic diseases?

Omega 3 Fish Oil

What's so special about fish oil?

The growing interest in fish oil supplements can be attributed to the wonderful benefits of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). EPA and DHA are found in cells, and are primarily responsible for the efficient functioning of the brain and stabilizing the central nervous system. The body must have a balanced amount of both EPA and DHA and must be in sufficient levels.

The medical community has not turned a blind eye to fish oil; on the contrary, the interest in fish oil supplements has grown much stronger in the last decade. Some people have even claimed, with conviction, that fish oil, particularly the high grade variety, will be the miracle food of this century.

Why? It's time we looked into the benefits of fish oil supplements. If you look at certain supplements, they have a narrow range for benefits that target one or two illnesses or one or two systems in the body. For example, one supplement may be good for the bones and teeth, while another may be good for the heart. Another supplement was formulated to target the central nervous system while another was designed to support the cardiovascular system.

The one good thing that can be said about a burp free fish oil supplement is that it has this "universal appeal." In layman's terms, fish oil benefits not one or two bodily functions and helps relieve not one or two illnesses, but many!

Fish Oil Helps Lower Health Risks

Dr. Byron Richards reports that more than 35,000 postmenopausal American women, aged 56 to 76 years, were followed during a 7-year period (from 2000 to 2007). The researchers discovered that those who took fish oil supplements decreased their risk of breast cancer by as much as 32%.

In a separate article, Dr. Richard cites how Eskimos, known for their traditional fish diet, have high levels of essential fatty acids – DHA and EPA – which can be sourced from fish and other fish-related products. High levels of these essentially fatty acids lowered the amount of triglycerides (bad cholesterol) and increased HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol), therefore reducing their susceptibility to inflammation.

Other researchers have also cited the benefits of fish oil in maintaining ideal weight, boosting concentration abilities, and strengthening bones and muscles. It has also shown to be effective in lowering a man's chances of developing prostate cancer. However, the highest compliment one can give to fish oil is that because it helps to reverse the aging process, it promotes longevity! A long healthy life hinges on the avoidance of disease and robust immune responses to viruses and bacteria. It is no wonder then that fish oil is being promoted as a savior in our never-ending fight against disease.

Fish Oil Supplements: Be Selective!

There are hundreds of fish oil supplements that have appeared in the market. But just because they say "fish oil" on the label does not mean that you’re getting the best dietary supplement. Be discriminating! Buy a fish oil supplement that is made in America from wild caught fish.

First, high quality fish oil supplements are made from specific fish species. The best are the oily fish - mackerel, anchovies and sardines. If the label specifies the species and they are recognized as oily fish, that’s a good thing.

Second, what process was used in the manufacture of the fish oil supplement? If the label says "molecularly distilled", then that means the fish were de-contaminated through purification where most or all of the toxins, PCBs, mercury and other metals found in fish are safely removed.

Third, you will want your fish oil supplement to contain an antioxidant, such as mixed tocopherols, which is vitamin E. This helps prevent oxidation.

Fish Oil Supplements: Uses

Hundreds of studies have been conducted to document the numerous benefits of fish oil supplements. That fish oil - or omega 3 - is good for the heart is a generally accepted fact.

Fish oil supplements can also help people diagnosed with diabetes (omega-3 can lessen fat and sugar), inflammation (people who suffer from arthritis, gout and other inflammatory diseases reported that their symptoms improved when given fish oil supplements), ADHD, high blood pressure, depression (people who are depressed or over-anxious were found to have low levels of EPA and DHA), and certain cancers.

Wild Caught Fish Oil

Taking a wild-caught omega 3 supplement would provide the needed EPA and DHA without the need for LNA to convert to EPA and DHA. An insufficiency in LNA can potentially hamper this conversion. People with low amounts of LNA are usually advised to consider a fish oil supplement to help promote conversion into EPA and DHA. Those who have high level of trans-fats, cholesterol and monounsaturates and are deficient in Vitamins B3, B6, C, magnesium and zinc have a reduced ability for LNA in their bodies to convert EPA and DHA.
